What is venous disease?
Venous disease refers to a group of diseases that damage veins causing valves to not close completely, enabling blood to leak backward or flow in both directions. Venous diseases include:
- Varicose veins
- Phlebitis
- Deep vein thrombosis
- Venous insufficiency
- Arterial or venous blood clots
- Peripheral arterial disease
- Pulmonary embolism
Symptoms
There are a variety of symptoms that can occur with venous disease from mild to life-threatening. These symptoms include:
- Blood clots
- Chronic leg swelling
- Increased pressure in the legs
- Increased pigmentation or discoloration of the skin
- Leg ulcers
- Pain or cramping of the legs
- Varicose and spider veins
Causes
There are a number of conditions that can cause the valves and veins to not work properly leading to venous disease. These causes include:
- Hypertension
- Obesity
- Pregnancy
- Family history
- Standing or sitting for prolonged periods without walking
